Sidhe s multimillion dollar contract with Warner Bros to make the computer game announced last August was the biggest coup for Sidhe which is New Zealand s only games maker with a high international profile. The film Speed Racer was directed by the creators of The Matrix Larry and Andy Wachowski and stars Emile Hirsch and Christina Ricci. One US report which said the film had a budget of US million NZ million described it as a family film for families that missed a couple of doses of Ritalin . Sidhe chief executive Mario Wynands says a version of the game for the Nintendo Wii console should go on sale a couple of days before Speed Racer premieres in US cinemas on May . The film is due out in Australia on June and will probably arrive in New Zealand about the same time. For commercial reasons the PlayStation version will be released later in the year to coincide with the film s availability on DVD. When you are releasing a game that is related to a movie releasing either at the theatrical release or at the DVD release or in this case both means that you get to leverage the hype of the movie at the same time Mr Wynands says. There is a lot of buzz that builds about the movie and we are starting to see some very excited chatter online and that will create a buzz for the game. Mr Wynands concedes there are a lot of games in the racing genre. What helps make this one unique is the vision the Wachowski brothers have for the film property itself. It is visually stunning. Sidhe is trying to raise the bar with each new game it makes he says. I can t comment on the feedback we have got from the Wachowski brothers or Warner Bros but certainly we are very pleased with the result. This is our first Nintendo Wii product. It has been a very enjoyable platform to work with and we feel we have made a game that takes advantage of those unique things the Wii has to offer in terms of motion sensing capability. Mr Wynands says Sidhe has already moved on to its next projects which it cannot disclose and is recruiting. Sidhe now employs about staff up from in August. The project based nature of the games industry is a challenge to manage he says. The way they deal with it in the film industry is they ramp up for a project and everybody is pretty much a contractor and at the end of the project everyone goes off on their merry way. We are approaching it differently in the sense that we are trying to build a team here that really gels well and can carry on from project to project. That creates a machine that you have to keep feeding and the way we deal with that is running multiple projects simultaneously and working across multiple platforms and multiple clients working on both our own games as well as games built for clients. Mr Wynands says Sidhe s first mainstream game for the global market Jackass The Game has sold hundreds of thousands of copies since its release in September. From a sales perspective Jackass has been far and away the most successful game we have done and it continues to sell pretty well in the US. While it hasn t necessarily been a critical success with critics who are approaching it as artistes we created the game for the demographic we were shooting for and it has had nothing but praise from consumers. As with any game it could have gone a lot better and it gone have gone a lot worse. If we can achieve similar success with Speed Racer we will be happy but hopefully we will be even more successful.
